Project

The RCS – Refining Cast Steel project aims to develop an innovative steel casting process with controlled levels of impurities, optimizing the incorporation of residues in their manufacture. It is intended to develop the possibility of producing cast stainless steels and carbon steels, in the first case to control the carbon content, in the second to control the sulfur and phosphorus and the respective non-metallic inclusions. These steels, already produced in steelmaking, are still very difficult to obtain by casting (with the desired quality levels). So, the objective of the present project is to develop methodologies for decarburization and desulfurization / dephosphorization, which make technically feasible the procedure. To do so, it will be sought for the introduction of products made from wastes, such as reagents useful for high temperature process, to obtain these results. On the other hand, attempts will be made to optimize the incorporation of metallic residues in the process, in order to reduce production costs. The project includes a development stage of a gas and powder insufflation system, their construction and test at pilot scale in order to validate the methodology developed.
